Genomics Journeyman – the road ahead

Retrospectively obvious as The Century of Genomics, genetics seemed the exciting science to be a part of, being a “child of the 70s”. This blog is the first step in recording my reminiscences of a career deeply embedded in the early phases of the combined genetics and computing revolution as it evolved between 1980 to 2010, or thereabouts. My particular interest will be in documenting the Genomics Gold Rush of 1993 to 2002 and trying to establish what difference we made, if any, to the health of the World, such as a 10-year-old dreams of.

My contribution was never as a leading light, but I am aware of a number of distinctive contributions that I made as an enabler of others. I did meet and sometimes worked with, even briefly, a few people who truly deserve the title of inspiring leaders and thinkers. I rarely had novel ideas, but delighted in delivering on the ideas of others.

In the next few months I hope to document firstly my own experiences, then develop to examining those of others, and how we strived to make sense of the public and commercial milieu we found ourselves in whilst trying to make a living and having a life!
